Update from Myakka

We were thrilled to hear Myakka River State Park opened back up for camping.

We were recently able to snag a spot in the Palmetto Ridge Loop! We have stayed in the Old Prairie loop as well and it was also very nice. The main difference is that the Palmetto Ridge loop offers full hook ups, gravel sites and plenty of barriers between sites (though some of the vegetation was more bare due to Hurricane Ian). The other loops are more akin to your basic Florida State Park campground. The bath houses in both loops were very clean when we visited.

Several parts of the part are still closed, most notably the canopy walk. The Lazy Gator café is open but operating out of a food truck. They are running boat tours but not tram tours at this time.

We were able to explore several trails while we were there and though the damage from the storm was apparent the park was still beautiful! We also saw plenty of raccoons, tons of gators, some deer and wild hogs!

Tip: One of our favorite things to do at the park is walk trails then head down to the Outpost where you can grab a snack, drink (including beer/wine) and some ice cream treats from the gift shop. The kids love running in the field nearby – just be aware there are gators so don’t let your littles wonder too close to the water’s edge!
